Member countries have committed to spend two percent of their respective GDPs on defense expenses by the year 2024. NATO was originally formed in an effort to solve conflicts peacefully and with the pledge that member countries will come to each other’s defense in case of an attack. At its formation, NATO had 12 member countries, which has now increased to 29 member countries and four aspiring member countries. NATO, which was formed in 1949, is the most powerful military alliance in the world. The country with the second largest number of military personnel was Türkiye, with around 461,500 personnel. In 2023, the United States had the largest number of military personnel out of all North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries, with almost 1.35 million troops.
